And just for fun, here’s a silly song I sang with my Kindergarten classes long ago in my student teaching days. Sung to the tune of “Clementine,” I slow it down and sometimes sing it in minor, holding at key moments with a tremolo on my guitar. Be creative, and make it work for you!
Now, I don’t do this song anymore because it perpetuates the misconception that the monster’s name is Frankenstein. The monster has no name; Frankenstein is the doctor. But if you can get over that, this song is for you. …Please just explain the difference to your kids.
In a castle, on a mountain,
Near the dark and murky Rhine,
Lived a doctor, the concoctor
Of a monster, Frankenstein.
Oh my monster, oh my monster,
Oh my monster, Frankenstein,
You were built to last forever,
Dreadful scary Frankenstein.
In a graveyard, near the castle,
Where the sun refused to shine,
Found some noses and some toeses
For his monster, Frankenstein.
Oh my monster, oh my monster,
Oh my monster, Frankenstein,
You were built to last forever,
Dreadful scary Frankenstein.
Scared the townsfolk, scared the mayor,
Scared the children, Frankenstein,
‘Til with torches, they did chase him
To the castle by the Rhine.
Oh my monster, oh my monster…
(Sorry, I tried to find a source for the lyrics, but I couldn’t find one. If someone knows where they actually came from—though I know it has many variations – please let me know.)
